HAPPY EARTH DAY TO OUR GLORIOUS PLANET BUT HOW WELL ARE WE LOOKING AFTER IT? GLOBALLY 40 MILLION TONS OF TEXTILES ARE SENT TO LANDFILLS OR TO BE INCINERATED EVERY YEAR 36,000 KILOS of clothes are thrown away EVERY HOUR in Australia
Our Mission at the Lifeline North Coast shops is to lead the way by becoming a CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING whilst supporting the Lifeline Crisis Support Helpline. Everything we do is about being part of the solution for fast fashion, landfills, and the throw-away culture, and our staff and volunteers are dedicated to developing a culture of recycling, reusing, and repurposing.
At our Warehouse/sorting centre in Toormina every day the donations we receive go through a rigorous cycle to make sure that AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE end up in Landfills.
The images here show this process: Donations are initially sorted at the donations bins. Clothes are taken to three massive central sorting bins inside the warehouse. This is where teams of our incredible volunteers go through every bag donated, and items are sorted into categories- womens, kids, mens, etc. These trolleys are then moved to the packing area to be boxed up and stored in the warehouse. These items are then sold through the 5 Lifeline North Coast shops. The retail managers put in weekly orders to stock their respective shops. Goods that are not sold through the shops are then packed into bails and sold to another charitable organisation in Sydney.
However, not all goods are worthy of getting onto the shelves at the LifeLine shops but even these are carefully sorted and moved on in some capacity to be recycled, re-used, or re-purposed. This is particularly so with scrap metal, electrical, eWaste, and cardboard. We have even found a home for old electrical chords – which is NOT IN LANDFILLIf you would like to volunteer with us to ‘fight the good fight’ here on the COFFS COAST we would love to hear from you.
